This page describes how the website handles personal information, including the optional email sign-up for Chapter 1 and the limited analytics service.
Limited analytics
This website uses Google Analytics 4, measurement ID G-HEXFX95CM1, only to produce statistical information about how the website is used and to improve it. Limited analytics is on when a page loads unless you have turned it off. A notice on your first visit explains this and lets you keep analytics on or turn it off. If you select “Turn analytics off”, Google Analytics is not loaded.
For storage and access on your device, the website relies on the statistical purposes exception in the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations. For any related personal data processing, the lawful basis is our legitimate interest in understanding and improving this website. Google Signals, advertising and optional sharing of Analytics data with Google are disabled.
While analytics is on, Google Analytics collects information about use of the website, such as pages viewed, technical browser and device information, approximate location and the time of a visit. We use this information in aggregated form to understand which pages are useful and to improve the website. We do not use Google Analytics for advertising, remarketing or personalised advertising.
Your choice is stored in your browser so the website can remember it. If your browser blocks this storage, the choice applies to the current page and you may be asked again on your next visit. Use here or at the foot of any page to change it. If you turn analytics off, which is free and does not affect your use of the site, future Analytics collection stops and the Analytics cookies set by this website are removed. Email updates
If you enter your email address in the free Chapter 1 form, we use it to send you a link to the illustrated Chapter 1 PDF and occasional news about the book, including when it is published. We use MailerLite to process your address and send these emails on our behalf. We do not sell your address or share it with other organisations for their own marketing.
Your email address is held by MailerLite, the service we use to send these emails. MailerLite processes it on our behalf and stores its data in the European Union. When you sign up, MailerLite also records the date and time and the IP address used, as a record of your consent. Our emails record whether they are opened and which links are clicked, so that we can see whether they are useful.
We send these emails with your consent. Every email has an unsubscribe link, and you can also ask to be removed by writing to alasdair@the4at.com. When you unsubscribe, we stop emailing you. MailerLite keeps the address on a suppression list so that it is not emailed again by mistake; ask us if you would like it deleted completely. The newsletter on Substack
Links to the newsletter Delirium, dementia and better care open Substack’s own website. Substack is not built into this website, and nothing from Substack loads on these pages. If you subscribe on Substack, Substack handles your details under its own privacy policy.
Website hosting and contact
The website has no account system or advertising. It is hosted by GitHub Pages. GitHub processes technical information, including IP addresses and request details, to serve and protect the website, even when optional analytics is off. See GitHub’s Privacy Statement.
The website’s fonts and images are served from this website. Apart from Google Analytics while it is on, the pages load nothing from other services. The Chapter 1 form sends your email address to MailerLite only when you press the button.
If you email us, we receive your email address and the information you include, and use these to respond to your enquiry.
